Volunteer – Skill Acquisition

Families with children with autism have a tremendous challenge in finding people they can trust with their child. They often have very restricted lives because they can’t leave their child or because they have to spend so many hours providing practice of skills with their child. This is hard on marriage relationships and for siblings in the family.

Someone who has volunteered through the skill acquisition program at the BTTC would be trained sufficiently to provide practice of appropriate skills with a child with autism and to supervise/play with a child with autism without unintentionally reinforcing inappropriate behaviors.

The program requires a commitment of at least 2 hours every week of hands-on supervised practice with a child with autism. Instruction, reading materials, and direct feedback are provided during the volunteer experience. The BTTC documents the volunteer hours and can then be used as a reference.

Volunteer – Assistance

There are many tasks that volunteers can be helpful with, including making training materials (coloring, cutting, laminating), shopping for training materials, repairing toys, cleaning of training materials, setting up and taking down training rooms. There is also a need for inputting data on the computer, copying video tapes, organizing and cataloging video tapes and books.
