Providing expertise in the application of applied behavior analysis (ABA) techniques under the supervision of full-time on-site Board Certified Behavior Analysts.

Students must have a diagnosis of one of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders (autism spectrum disorders) or mental retardation. Primary emphasis is for children ages 18 months – 7 years at the time of application, but there are limited positions for older children. One-on-one intensive ABA training is provided 8:30-3 (6.5 hours per day), Monday – Friday for the full time day treatment program, or for 3 hours per day in the a.m. or p.m. for the part-time program. Texana Center business holiday schedule is followed, which provides substantially fewer closed days than the typical ISD holiday schedule. The program is year round.

Treatment Goals of the BTTC Day Treatment Program:

  1. Provide individualized treatment to teach the skills necessary to allow children to function within their family and community environments
  2. Integrate children into their natural learning environments, and reduce the need for one on one training
  3. Teach behavior change agents including parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, and therapists how to use the ABA procedures to teach the child
  4. Work closely with families to identify the priority skills for each individual child that will promote maximum community inclusion.

A major goal of the program is to teach each child how to learn and behave in a less restrictive, more natural school environment. Inclusion opportunities with private or public school can be supported with BTTC staff, as arranged by each individual’s private institution or local school district.

Type of Program

The BTTC Day Treatment Program provides a therapeutic setting for students with a diagnosis of mental retardation or one of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders, including autism, using the principles of ABA to teach skills in the area of:

Appropriate Behavior
Self-care
Communication
Social Skills
Academics
Classroom Inclusion

Training is one on one with an emphasis on teaching the child to respond within a more natural group setting. The program is not a certified TEA program, but academic skills are taught. School districts can contract to send a student to BTTC Day Treatment for behavior assessment and program development. Extensive staff training is then provided to the school staff as part of the transition back into the school setting.

The Behavior Treatment and Training Center (BTTC)

The BTTC is a well-established and respected service provider. The program was established in 1990 to provide consultative, hands-on expertise in ABA to agencies, schools, and families. The BTTC provides individualized ABA services through a short-term ICF/MR residential program for children ages 8-17 who display severe behavior challenges, an outreach program for less severe behavior challenges which do not require immediate removal from the home, and the BTTC Day Treatment program. Additional services available include consultation by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to public schools, other agencies, and private families, as well as management of in-home ABA programs by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

The BTTC has the staff expertise, an on-going clinical practice, a relationship with the local school districts, and a devotion to continuing education for the staff.

The residential program employs 3 Board Certified Behavior Analysts. The BTTC Community Programs include the Outreach, and Day Treatment officed at the Airport Facility. The Outreach Program employs 5 Board Certified Behavior Analysts. All three community programs are managed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and the overall BTTC program, including the residential program and community programs, is Managed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The BTTC has positions for 12  BCBA’s and 2 BCABA’s.

The BTTC Day Treatment program was established in January 2004 with two children initially and has since served nearly 100 children with a current enrollment of 35-42 children.  The Texana BTTC Day Treatment program has been successful because of the experience, expertise, and enthusiasm of a well-qualified staff.

I want to send my child to a day treatment program; Why Should I Select the Texana BTTC Day Treatment Program?

  1. There are 4 full-time Board Certified Behavior Analysts who are present daily and work hands-on within the day treatment program. (Kelly Bivens, Angela Buchanio, Ellen Catoe, and Erin Ahrens)
  2. The Lead BCBA, Kelly Bivens, has over 14 years experience conducting individualized ABA treatment for children with autism and has been a certified teacher in the state of Texas with 3 years experience teaching in a PPCD classroom.
  3. The children ages 3-8 in the DARS program have a full time program BCBA for every 9-10 children, plus a staff training BCaBA to assist across the 18-20 children enrolled in the program. The non-DARS program children have a BCBA ratio of 1:12.
  4. The BTTC Day Treatment Program has an open-door policy for parents to observe their child at any time without requiring advance scheduling. There are 26 video cameras with audio throughout the program allowing a parent to enter the building through the office entrance without their child knowing they are present (and often the staff) and observe the classroom over the monitor system. The monitor system includes a 54” LCD screen, cameras with rotate and zoom capabilities, and auditory. The cameras can be easily set to record.
  5. The Lead BCBA is assigned full-time to student programming and staff supervision/training. The BTTC Community Programs Manager is a separate BCBA position who is responsible for the administrative duties of the Day Treatment Program. The Lead BCBA spends the hours the students are present, in the classrooms.
  6. The BTTC Community Programs employ 10 Board Certified Behavior Analysts, all of whom office at the same location and provide a wonderful resource and back-up for the Day Treatment Program. The BTTC Community Programs includes the BTTC Outreach Program which has an established reputation for the past 19 years of providing ABA treatment to individuals of all ages who display severe aggressive and self-injurious behaviors in addition to working with skill acquisition.
  7. The location is very convenient for the Houston, Sugarland, Katy areas and areas south of Houston, just off Highway 59 South.
  8. The facility is pleasant and fun for children with brightly painted classrooms, two fenced in grassy playground areas with play equipment for children and toddlers and open space for learning t-ball and soccer, an outdoor basketball court that has been converted for bicycle riding, wagon riding, and roller skating, and a kitchen with appliances for simple meal preparation and eating. New in 2009 is the 560 square foot Enriched Environment room, with a water bubble tower, ceiling swing, Wii, fun wall-mounted manipulatives, and a rock climbing wall. The buildings are part of the Texana Center central office complex of 7 buildings on landscaped property which houses the administration departments of Texana Center.
  9. There are more program days for your child because Texana does not follow a school schedule. Texana only gives staff 7 holidays each year, and since the staff are here, the students can be here. The Texana BTTC Day Treatment program is year round.
  10. Staff are full time employees of Texana and therefore staff training is conducted daily within the 30 minutes before students arrive in the mornings and the 1.5 hours after the students leave in the afternoon. There are minimum scheduled staff training days which close the program to students.
  11. Parent meetings are scheduled with the BCBA Program Supervisor and not just with the lead trainer.
